Oh my god, it’s true. I’m a homosexual [writing about depictions of other homosexuals]!
Hi everyone! Wow. Here we are. You’ve potentially just subscribed to a newsletter in which I’m going to write your ear off about some gay ass shit. Congratulations.
If you’re reading, you’ve either succumbed to a bribe, or you really, really love enthusiastic pitches about the queer media you might need in your life but never knew you could access. Since I’m a film programmer and writer focused on all things queer, and since my love language is in media recommendations, this newsletter is my way of both providing my most-requested service, and spontaneously generating my own serotonin in this awfully lonely landscape.
Starting this January, I’ll deliver fresh-baked essays, and make film, TV, and web series recommendations up to twice a month, with the occasional thirst post thrown in. (Who are we kidding - all writing about queer media is in yearning. If god didn’t want me to be so thirsty, they wouldn’t have invented burning sidelong glances between actresses.)
In any case, I want to talk about some of the hundreds of titles you might have missed, and encourage you not to rely on the One Lesbian Film released by major studios per year. I do not want you to fall prey to the “All Lesbian Movies are Set in The Past and Also White and Also Acted by Big Straight Names” clickbait! Todd Haynes, I love you, but there is more to life than Carol (2015)!
Be warned: this newsletter & its subjects will frequently be R-rated, but as long as queer identities and any hint of autonomous sexuality are censored for their mere existence, who gives a flying fuck about a ratings system?
Hints of what you might be able to look forward to in the coming year:
An undying love for lesbian movies directed by queer women
Endorsements of glorious punk misandry wreaked by queer and trans troublemakers
Tributes to the characters that launched a thousand gay crushes
Rides in the Wayback Machine to the first filmic depictions of homosexuality, as well as those lost to time
Gleeful disparagement of films about as queer as a pair of Wells Fargo pride sunglasses
Investigations into the Viola Davis Bisexual Cinematic Universe and the Evan Rachel Wood Pantheon
And report cards on film festival favorites, new releases, and where to watch ‘em.
If you like what I do, you can support me monetarily through a yearly or monthly subscription, but this newsletter will remain free to access regardless. I’m thrilled to be here and queer, and tickled that you would join me. See you in 2021!
See a gay movie, send a gay movie.
